“Jesus Dropped the Charges”
Earl Bynum and Phillip Carter
SOV Inc. (release date: March 30, 2024)

By Robert M. Marovich

Known for their skilled direction of gospel choirs, Earl Bynum and Phillip Carter set their batons down for a moment and channel the O’Neal Twins on “Jesus Dropped the Charges.”

Bynum and Carter do Edgar and Edward O’Neal proud on their cover of the 1980s hit, written by Richard “Mr. Clean” White. The St. Louis brother duo sang the song at the 1981 National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses (NCGCC). When that performance was filmed by George Nierenberg and used in his 1982 gospel music documentary, Say Amen, Somebody, the song became an international favorite.

Naturally, Bynum and Carter harmonize alongside a vibrant choir that emulates the electrifying NCGCC experience. It’s gratifying to hear solid gospel songs with memorable melodies and lyrics like “Jesus Dropped the Charges” getting a new life.
