“Lord You Are Good”
Beverly Crawford
Independent (release date: September 1, 2023)

By Robert M. Marovich

“Lord You Are Good” is not your typical sweeping-through-the-city Beverly Crawford experience.

A rework of the 2016 Todd Galberth hit, the worship song has more of an urban AC or a P&W vibe than a traditional workout.

This worried me initially. I wondered whether the contemporary structure would fence in Crawford’s celebrated gospel shout. Turns out I needn’t have worried—Crawford doesn’t let anything get in her way. By the vamp, she’s completely obliterated the arrangement and melody and gets back to church. She lofts blues notes and soprano whoops, she roars and growls and exhorts in preacher’s breath. That’s how good the Lord is. Crawford’s performance after the first 90 seconds is what sells the song.
